ICC announces umpire and match referee appointments for group stage of upcoming ICC Women's World Cup 2009

The ICC today announced details of the umpire and match referee appointments for the opening group stage of the upcoming ICC Women’s World Cup 2009, which will take place from 7 to 22 March.

David Jukes will be the match referee for the opening group stages and will then hand over the charge to Brian Aldridge who will be the match referee for the Super Six stage and the final. Both the referees will oversee matches at the North Sydney Oval which will be covered live by ICC’s official broadcaster ESPN STAR Sports.

The on-field umpires will be split between appointments from the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Umpires, the Emirates International Panel of ICC Umpires, the ICC Associate and Affiliate International Umpires’ Panel, East Asia-Pacific Regional Panel and domestic panel umpires from Australia and New Zealand.

The 13-member umpires’ panel also includes female umpire Kathy Cross who is a member of New Zealand’s Regional Panel. Cross stood in the 2000 Women’s World Cup in New Zealand and also did in two matches of the quadrangular World Series of Women’s Cricket tournament staged in New Zealand in early 2003.

Commenting on her appointment, Cross said: “I am thoroughly looking forward to the new challenge of umpiring in matches involving different teams and meeting different people.

“I played club cricket for Naenae Cricket Club in Lower Hutt, Wellington, and was an opening batter and wicketkeeper. As players, we used to umpire in our own matches and I used to enjoying doing lots of umpiring in those matches. So when I stopped playing cricket, I thought I must continue umpiring which was the best way to stay closer to the game.

“I have been umpiring for the last 10 years and have stood in men’s State Shield one-day tournament matches besides umpiring in the Women’s World Cup in 2000 and the Rose Bowl Series.”

Appointments for the Super Six stage and the final will be announced in due course.
